Are you fortunate enough to have a yard? There are few things as enjoyable as being able to step outside into your own personal oasis. Of course, creating that perfect outdoor space can be costly—but it doesn’t have to be. By following a few simple modern landscaping tips, you can create an enviable yard without breaking the bank!

Here are five things you can do to improve your landscape on a budget…

1) Do some planting

It goes without saying that plants are the key to gorgeous landscaping. What many gardeners don’t know is, some of the most beautiful flowers, shrubs, and trees come with affordable price tags. For the greatest impact, opt for colourful vegetation. From pansies to a variety of flowering dogwood and cherry trees, there’s no shortage of vibrant plants that are well-suited to growing here—and at a relatively low cost. A breathtaking pop of colour that doesn’t cost a fortune? What’s not to love!

2) Opt for containers

Container gardening is all the rage, and for good reason. It can save space, and take a lot less planning than more extensive in-ground planting. Luckily, it can also be done affordably. In addition to opting for cost-effective seeds and plants, you can easily cut down on what you’d usually pay for containers. Hit up a thrift store to find some inexpensive options, or take a closer look at what you already own. Those old wooden crates might just have a better use than sitting in the shed!

3) Grow your food

Planting your own food and watching it grow can be a fun project—one that’s enjoyable for the whole family. Not only that, but cultivating vegetables and herbs can also lead to a less hefty grocery bill. If you don’t have a ton of room, opt for space-savers like radishes and carrots, along with herbs like thyme and oregano. If you have more square footage, the options are almost endless—from cucumbers and beans to squash and melons!

4) Beautify your lawn

While you can spend a fortune on maintaining that perfect patch of green, you certainly don’t have to. By ensuring you know the basics, you can boost your yard’s appeal while keeping costs low. For starters, don’t cut your grass too short. Keep it at around 2.5 to 3 inches—and don’t overwater it. About an inch of coverage once a week should suffice under normal weather conditions. Your fertilizer can also make a difference, so ask an associate at your local gardening store to help you choose the right one!

5) One word: repurpose

Most homeowners have a lot of old stuff lying around. The good news for gardeners is, modern landscaping means much of it can be repurposed. Have you ever thought of painting those old tires and turning them into brightly-hued planters? What about including that wheelbarrow you never use in a cute front yard display? You can even dig out the twinkle lights for some budget-conscious lighting—and a bit of whimsical charm. Just make sure you stick with the white ones (or risk looking like you forgot to take down the Christmas decorations).
